The Mission + Approach.
The Verandah Project is a Tasmanian not-for-profit initiative advocating for a new way of thinking about housing.
Our mission is simple: to put people and community at the centre of housing. We are working to introduce models that create permanently affordable homes, foster connection, and strengthen neighbourhoods — homes that are designed to serve generations, not markets.
Right now, we are in the advocacy and scoping phase. We aim to build the case, test the ideas, and gather the partnerships needed to make this vision real.
We believe Tasmania can lead with a homegrown housing model. Our approach combines two proven ideas that, together, create something both innovative and practical:
Community Land Trusts (CLTs) — keep land in community hands permanently, ensuring homes stay affordable across generations.
Co-operative housing — residents share governance, decision-making, and responsibility for common spaces, reducing costs while building belonging.
We imagine medium-density apartment communities with shared gardens, play spaces, and walkways, supported by ground-floor businesses that align with community values.
At this stage, our approach is not a fixed blueprint but an evolving model. We are testing, discussing, and adapting it for Tasmania's unique context.
